Why We should Sabbath

When was the last time you stopped, and I mean really stopped? Put your phone down, turned off the tv, stopped answering work emails when you are off the clock, and got off Amazon.
It is such a norm in our society that if you are a busier person, you are seen as more important, versus if you do less then you are not as important.
So, what does God say about this? Actually, he made a whole day to help resolve this sense of hurry in our lives and help us to stop. It’s called the Sabbath. If we look at the 10 commandments the bible says,” “Remember the Sabbath day by keeping it holy. Six days you shall labor and do all your work, but the seventh day is a sabbath to the Lord your God. On it you shall not do any work, neither you, nor your son or daughter, nor your male or female servant, nor your animals, nor any foreigner residing in your towns. For in six days the Lord made the heavens and the earth, the sea, and all that is in them, but he rested on the seventh day. Therefore the Lord blessed the Sabbath day and made it holy..” (Exodus 20 8-11 NIV)
So, if God can make the time to rest even after making the earth and all of its inhabitants, why can’t we stop at the end of the work week? It’s not easy, I am sure right now as you are reading this you can think of a handful of things you can be doing, but we as humans even need to rest. Our mental health is important to remember, and God has thought of a way for us to spend some time doing some self care by commanding it.
God wants us to stop and worship him 1 day a week, whether you are at church on Sunday, going for a walk and taking in God’s creation, spending time with family or friends. Just take the time to rest, and be with God. How will you spend your Sabbath this week?
P.S. If you are looking to dive deeper into this topic, you should read, “The Ruthless Elimination of Hurry,” by John Mark Comer.
